1. What cookies are

Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Some are needed for the site to work; others are optional and help us understand how the site is used. This page lists every one we use.

2. Nothing loads until you agree

Google Analytics only starts running once you select “Agree” in the consent banner. If you decline, no analytics cookies are set at all — not set and then ignored, but never set. Declining does not affect anything else on the site.

3. What we use

Remembering your choice — essential

When you pick “Agree” or “Decline”, we save that choice in your browser's local storage under the key geekout-rdc26-consent. Strictly speaking this is not a cookie, but it works the same way from your point of view. It stays until you clear your browser's site data, and it never leaves your device.

Google Analytics 4 — optional

Set by Google LLC, and only after you agree. We use it to count visits and see which parts of the page people actually read.

  • _ga — tells one browser apart from another. Lasts 2 years.
  • _ga_1W04XV281C — keeps the session state. Lasts 2 years.

What Google receives: cookies, your device and browser details, and which pages you looked at. Your IP address is used to work out roughly where you are and is not logged or stored by Google Analytics 4. This goes to Google's servers in the United States and is processed in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy. We keep analytics data for 14 months, after which Google deletes it automatically.

What we do not use

No advertising cookies. No cross-site tracking. We do not sell or share what we collect for advertising purposes.

4. Changing your mind

Select Cookie settings in the footer of any page and the banner comes back, so you can switch your answer at any time. Withdrawing is exactly as easy as agreeing was.

You can also clear cookies and site data from your browser's own settings, which resets everything.

5. Other services we link to

If you follow a link away from this site, the service you land on sets its own cookies under its own policy:

  • Google Forms — our general sign-up form. The Free Ice Cream Campaign form is hosted on this site and does not go through Google Forms.
  • Discord — our community
  • YouTube — the video on this page. Nothing is requested from YouTube until you press play; before that we only show a still image.
